Why Is My Pool Losing Water?

How to describe water loss and decide when to ask for a professional assessment.

Start with the pattern

Some water loss is normal, but a repeated drop that seems unusual for your pool deserves attention. The useful first question is not “Where is the leak?” It is “What pattern can I observe?” Note the waterline at about the same time each day and whether the pool was used, topped up, or exposed to changing conditions.

If the level changes more while equipment runs, mention that. If you see a wet area by the equipment pad or water running where it should not, note the location without opening or adjusting equipment. These details help a professional choose an inspection approach.

What a specialist may look at

A pool leak professional may check visible plumbing and equipment, then consider the pool structure and underground lines if needed. The right testing depends on the pool and the symptoms. A single wet spot or falling waterline is a clue, not a diagnosis.

Water loss can also be confused with normal evaporation, splash-out, or an auto-fill issue. A professional can help separate these possibilities before repair work is discussed.

What to include in a request

Include how quickly the level appears to fall, how long it has happened, whether the pump schedule seems related, and whether you see moisture around equipment. If you are unsure, say so. An honest “not sure” is more useful than guessing at a buried pipe failure.

If water is near electrical equipment, keep clear and ask a qualified professional for help. Do not dig, open pressurized components, or work inside electrical enclosures.
